A blog by Joe Caponi about beers and wines, particularly those from Long Island, along with a variety of other comments. This blog was primarily active from 2002-2006, when I was making it out to more wineries and brewpubs!

On New England Wine
The New England Wine Gazette, which we picked up at Stonington, lists 40 New England wineries: 13 in Connecticut, 5 in Maine; 11 in Massachusetts; 2 in New Hampshire; 4 in Rhode Island; and 5 in Vermont.

Connecticut Report
We took the kids to Connecticut last weekend, visiting Mystic Seaport and Aquarium, the USS Nautilus Submarine Museum, the Science Center, Gillette Castle, and rode the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry. (Though we didn't get a chance to visit the intriguingly named Devil's Hopyard state park nearby.)
Three recommended restaurants: Go Fish, by the aquarium, with regularly scheduled wine events; the Seahorse in Noank; and the Mansion Clam House in Westport.
And, in all the excitement, we made it to a winery: Stonington Vineyards, on a beautiful site in the hills north of Mystic. Their 2002 Cabernet Franc isn't out yet, but they offered us a half dozen terrific whites, including styles, like Chardonnay, Gewurtzraminer and Riesling, that aren't normally among our favorites. We ended up buying a 2001 Fume Blanc, the 2002 Gewurztraminer, and their Seaport White. Nicely priced, and they were very friendly to all of us, even with Sam and Hudson running around their spacious tasting room.
